Well, I have not been able to keep up with the blog. Since I can't find the time, partly because the 10 minutes I do spend on the computer is usually on Facebook, I am going to have to take a break from the blog. Since John takes the computer to work I don't have computer access all day and my nights are increasingly chaotic. I promise be a good blogger when I have more time!

Weekend Blogger

Okay, so it's looking like I an not able to blog as much as I thought I would be able to. Oh well, I will get to it when I can I guess. The big event last week was a visit from Uncle Jeff. We had a great time showing Jeff all the sites of Williamsburg. Sam especially enjoyed "driving" Jeff's car!
The weather has been beautiful so we have been able to take lots of trips to the park and do some hiking as well. Sam is totally in his element when we are outside. He loves talking about the leaves changing and has found interest in climbing trees. Owen seems to already be a fan of the outdoors as well. I always have Owen in the Bjorn when we are walking in the woods and he looks straight up at all the trees above. Like Sam, he seems content outside.

Halloween was a blast. Sam and I literally ran to every house. I am not sure what excited him most, trick or treating or holding the flashlight. He insisted on running through the entire neighborhood. I did have a proud moment- he chose to eat an apple instead of his candy when we came home from trick or treating. John, Owen, and Uncle Jeff stayed at the house to hand out candy.

Tomorrow is the big day! We will be going to the polls as a family. We will be there when they open. Not because we want to be there at 6:00am but because we might as well considering our children are not aware of the time change and they are up before the sun.

A little grown up time

Finally! John and I got to go out for a few hours on Saturday night. We went to see Trey Anastasio play in Ricmond- we had a great time. Jen and Craig watched the boys and we had a night out! Thanks to Craig for the VIP tickets!! After a wonderful breakfast yesterday with Jen and Lily we headed back to Williamsburg. Sam and Lily had so much fun playing together. It's so fun to see Lily walking around. She and Sam are sure to be great friends. I can't help but thinking that phase when the babies go from babies to toddlers is bittersweet. In our case, we are expieriencing the transition from toddler to little boy and it is a little heartbreaking at times.

My friend Ellen had invited us all to her house for a cook out and Kayaking yesterday so Owen and I did that while Sam and John watched the Skins. It was a beautiful day and everyone was more than happy to watch Owen so that I could Kayak for a bit. As usual, he was as sweet and charming as ever.

Today I took Sam and Owen to Jumping Joey's so that Sam could get out some energy. After two hours of bouncing around it was time for a nap. I can't seem to get the boys to nap at the same time so still no naps for mom. I did however have yoga tonight so I guess I shouldn't complain. Sam has school tomorrow so maybe Owen and I will sneak in a nap...

Catching Up

I feel like I have so much to catch up on. Friday Owen and I joined Sam at school for a special activity. I asked Sam's teacher how he is doing in school. She said he is doing great but that he seems to be bored with the some of the activities she has planned. She also said that he is very active. I'm a teacher- I am familiar with teacher talk. At first I thought, "well he's bored because he's so bright right?" Then I remembered, that's teacher code for "He doesn't want to take part in activities that require sitting still." "Very active" is typically code for, "he runs and jumps on tables." Oh well, he loves school and they said they love him so that's all that matters I guess. Besides, he comes by it honestly. I can't sit still for more than 5 minutes and John is a self proclaimed daydreamer.

We babysat for some friends Saturday night so that was fun for all! Sunday, we finally made it to the pumpkin patch. We had been promising Sam we were going to go and we could not have gone on a better day. We all had a great time. Needless to say, Sam was very excited to ride tractors. I was very excited about the pumpkin pie. Owen was excited to be in the Bjorn with daddy all day while walking around the pumpkin patch. Later that day I took Sam to the grocery and he made two very big decisions. On the way to the store he told me he didn't want his ears anymore. He told me his are too soft and that he just really doesn't want them anymore. I told him he needed them to hear and he said he would just use Owen's.
He also decided that the lobsters in the tank in the seafood dept. were too scary. He's been freaked out by them for awhile but he finally decided that we couldn't go near them anymore.

Tomorrow it's off to another pumpkin patch! I will post pictures soon.

Fall Festivities

This has been a beautiful weekend here in Williamsbug. Friday we had a great visit from Grandma and Grandpa. It was great to see them and Sam always loves having Grandpa to play with for a couple of hours. Yesterday morning we went to the farmer's market. We bought the most delicious cookies ever! There was also a John Deer Gator that Sam just had to sit on. Why does it seem that EVERYWHERE we go there is some sort of vehicle that Sam just has to sit on? After Sam's nap he got to visit the fire department, always a favorite activity. It's fire safety month so the fire station had an open house.

Today we went to a fall festival at Camp Chanco. It was actually a reunion of sorts for John. We got to see lots of friends and the boys got to go on a hayride. There was also a school bus there, which sam had to sit on. John and I decided to treat ourselves to some yummy Italian take out to end the busy weekend. I finally posted a couple of pictures from our trip to KY (below). I am still trying to figure out how to do a slideshow!!

The "worried" pumpkin we carved with Uncle Aaron at Gram and PawPaw's.

Our visit with Janelle in KY. We love our Janelle!

Ready for a ride on the four wheeler! The pink helmet and shirt with pink cherries were on load from Miss Adleigh Grace.

Today was a fun day for all, except John. John had parent teacher confrences today so I knew it would be a long day for us. I find it best to have many activities on days like this. I'm less likely to go crazy if we are out and about. This morning we met the Federicos at the park for play and a picnic. After Sam's nap we went to a different park and took a hike. The hike is a familiar one for Sam but it is a mile, so it's a nice little walk for him. I told him to find red and yellow leaves and he really got into it. After dinner we took the leaves and made a suncatcher. He was really proud of his leaves. He is also learning to have patience. It has been taking us about an hour to get Owen down for the night. On nights that I am here by myslef Sam really does have to be patient while I am getting Owen down.

That being said, Sam did make an observation the night before last.
Both kids were in bed but Sam had not gone to sleep yet when Owen woke up and needed to be fed. I was feeding Owen and Sam came down the hallway and said "This isn't fair." He then said, "It isn't fair that I have to be in bed." We asked him three different times what he said because we kind of couldn't believe he was saying this. Of course, he was referring to the fact that Owen was out of bed and he was in bed. I felt so bad for him because to him it really doesn't seem fair. I didn't know he could understand the concept of fair. We had to agree with him, explain that Owen needed a snack, and put him back to bed.

BIG DAY

Yesterday was a big day in the Gulick house. Sam pooped in the potty! As promised, we went to target and he got the biggest firetruck we could find. Since we have six firetrucks already I tried to persuade him to choose a bowling set, leap frog computer thing, or a really cool tent but he was determined to get the firetruck.

The other big accomplishment was Owen sleeping through the night. Owen slept from 9:00-5:00am. I woke up at our usual time of 2:30am in a panic. I made the familiar run into Owen's room confused as to why he was not demanding a feeding. Ahhhh, a sleeping baby. I was very apprehensive as I went back to sleep. I just knew that as soon as I went to sleep he would wake up. I actually considered waking him just to get in a feeding so that my sleep would not be interrupted an hour later. Wake a sleeping baby?? It sounds crazy but any mother knows what I am talking about- I mean, I was already up. I decided I would just see what happened. He didn't wake until 5am!! Not only that but when I brought him to bed to nurse (which I only do when it is after 4am) he stayed asleep until 7:30am. Of course Sam was up at 6:00am but at least there was only one. I know this will probably not happen tonight- we shall see...

Our Trip To KY

I didn't have a chance to post while in KY so I will do my best to recap. Everyone had a great time!! It will be easier if I think in terms of days...
Saturday- the plane ride went fairly well. Thank God for portable DVD players. Once we arrived in Nashville we thought it would be best to let Sam run around before getting back in the car. Gram had a great idea to go to Rainforest Cafe. Sam absolutely loved it, however the gorillas were a bit scary! When we got to Gram's Sam was super excited to see all the new toys!

Sunday-Sam and I went to the park in Mayfield and visited with Jen and Addaleigh. We then went to visit Grandma Lucy and Grandpa Dean. Aunt Terry, Adleigh Grace, and Aunt Andrea were there too. Sam discovered his talents for baseball today! That evening uncle Jeff joined us for dinner at Grams. Of course Sam had uncle Jeff outside playing baseball and throwing rocks.

Monday-The morning started off rough. At 4:00am we had to take Owen to the ER. He had a very high temp. A chest X-RAY determined he had a viral infection in his chest. It was really scary and I am so relieved he is feeling better. Needless to say, we stayed at Grams the rest of the day. I was on the phone throughout the day with Owen's pediatrician in VA because his fever was getting higher throughout the day.

Tuesday-Uncle Aaron came over for a visit and played baseball with Sam. Since Owen was feeling better Sam and I were able to take a hike around the farm. We had a great time! We went to the big pond and Sam threw rocks. This was pretty much an every day activity. That night we had dinner at Aunt Terry's house. Uncle Leonard took Sam for a ride on the 4-wheeler around their beautiful land. Even though Sam had a helmet, I was a bit nervous. Needless to say, the pink helmet Adleigh let Sam borrow was a permanent fixture for the rest of the trip.

Wednesday-Mom went back to work so it was just me and the boys. Uncle Denham was there to entertain us for a bit. After another hike we went to visit Shelley and the kids for the day. That evening I went to visit some friends while Mom, Sam, Owen, and Uncle Aaron made cupcakes.

Thursday-Sam, Owen, and I met cousin Melanie at the park for some lunch. That afternoon there was more baseball and more rock throwing. That evening Owen and I spent the night with Janelle, and watched the debate. sigh..........
I had a great time with Janelle though and Owen was perfect. This week Owen has really started to laugh and "talk".

Friday- We spent the morning outside with Uncle Kyle and Uncle Denham. Later, we all carved a pumpkin. Sam decided we should carve a scary pumpkin but that night once it was lit he kept saying the pumpkin looked "worried". Once the kids went down for a nap Gram and I baked a pumpkin pie to take to Grandma Lucy's house. The dinner at Grandma Lucy's house was yummy, everyone was there and we even had a surprise visit from Cousin Jesse.

Saturday- We went to Nashville early to visit with Uncle Steve and family. Then it was back to the airport. All was going smoothly on the plane until the explosive diarrhea. Owen, not me. Changing a diaper and clothes on a two month old was one of the more challenging things I have done thus far. I was glad to land. John met us at the gate and we were welcomed with flowers, dinner, and a cake at home. He should be well rested after a week without the wife and kids!

With the exception of the visit to the ER, we had a great time. Thanks to Gram for the wonderful meals, many loaves of banana bread (per sam's request), round the clock assistance, and all around good time. I loved seeing all my friends and family. We missed Paw Paw but we know he is having a great time in Alaska!!

I have tried to put the pictures on a sideshow but of course it won't work for me. It will take me a bit but I do plan to put some pictures from our trip. I have posted a few below.

Sam loved throwing rocks in Paw Paw's frog pond!

Going Home

I will be brief as I am trying to pack and watch the debate. We are so excited about going to KY. Sam is very much looking forward to riding in an airplane and even more excited about seeing Gram.

I am going to attempt to post some pics but it may not work as our camera is not communicating with out laptop.

In our neck of the woods

Our big activity for tomorrow is to attempt to be on the Today Show. Matt and the gang will be here in Williamsburg so I thought we would head on down and watch the show! Getting there early will not be a problem but staying there in one spot may prove to be the real challenge.

Owen was such a cutie today. We speant a long time making eyes at each other. He has the sweetest smile and most adorable voice when he "talks" to me. He loves his big brother as well. When Sam talks to him he lights up and flashes a big smile. Sam always says to Owen, "Hi precious, your my best friend." Those are his exact words, it melts my heart. He shows so much love for Owen, he has never once said an unkind word or done anything that may hurt Owen.

I need to remind everyone that it really does take me forever to get pictures on here so please be patient. Speaking of pictures, there was an opportunity for a hilarious picture tonight but I thought for Sam's sake I better resist the temptation. I will give you a mental image instead. I am rocking Owen to sleep and I hear John tell Sam to take off his clothes and he would be in to help with the PJs in a minute. I hear the sounds of Sam's kitchen so I sneak in to take a peak. I see my sweet Sam "cooking" wearing NOTHING but his socks and shoes along with his pilot helmet and my sunglasses. He did what he was told but he has trouble with his socks and shoes. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

We took a family trip to Ben and Jerry's for some dessert tonight. We usually get Sam sorbet. He never realizes that he is not getting the real thing. Tonight he asked John and I both for bites of our ice cream. After that he looked at his sorbet with a turned up nose. I think the days of ordering Sam fruity sorbet while we indulge in Half Baked are over, he's on to us!

Where does the weekend go?

We had a very busy weekend as anticipated. Saturday John had the kids while I had some time out with a friend. Boy, did I need that! That evening we had dinner with friends. They have two boys as well so it's nice that they can all play.

Sunday we headed up to Richmond where John and Craig met up for the Redskins game. Sam, Owen, and I had a great time spending the day with Jen and Lily. Sam especially loved throwing rocks in the creek and getting all muddy. He also enjoyed cheering on Lily as she continues to take steps. We couldn't go to Richmond without a visit to Nadine's. I enjoyed visiting with Kristen and Sam and Nadine enjoyed the water table, which meant yet another change of clothes for the day. When Sam and Nadine see each other they actually squeal with excitement. They truly are best friends.

Needless to say, I was pretty tired after all the running around. Luckily, the stars were aligned and both boys napped at the same time today. I finally got a nap! It's amazing what extra sleep can do. This morning I took the boys to story time at the library. Sam can sit for 2-3 stories and then off to the train table. After the train table we went to look at the fountain outside and yep, you guessed it, another change of clothes. By the way, Owen is sleeping through all of this.
Once John was home and Sam was up from his nap I decided Sam needed some mommy only time. I know it sounds like we do a lot but I usually always have Owen attached to me which really hinders my ability to play with Sam like he's used to. Not that I mind having Owen attached to me of course, but Sam could take it or leave it. So after dinner Sam and I went to the park. This also gave John and Owen some time alone. Now both kids and daddy are all in bed. I should probably hit the sack as well, next shift starts in 1 hour!

Big Night Out

I decided that it was time we attempted dinner out with both kids at a restaurant other than chick-fil-a. We really talked it up to Sam- we brought a few m&ms, a lollipop, two books, and play dough. As you know, Sam rarely gets candy so we were sure that would work. We even told him if he would stay at the table he would get ice cream after dinner. We didn't even ask him to stay in his seat, all he had to do was stay at the table. As for Owen, we knew if we could just get him to fall asleep he would fine. We dined outside thinking that would be less disturbing to the other patrons. He probably would have stayed at the table except all the tables had candles on them so of course he really wanted to go and blow them all out. Overall, I think all of the incentives worked fairly well. Owen did fine until right before the food came. So, of course I had to nurse him as my food sat getting cold. One might think that nursing in public might be the embarrassing part. No, that would have to be when the server brought me a drink. Sam said "Mommy, what is that?" I was thinking that I should be honest so I replied, "it's a beer Sam". Then he YELLS "I love beer!" I don't know if the glares were because my two year old was announcing his passion for beer or because I was nursing a baby and drinking a beer. I wanted to yell, "everyone knows it perfectly safe to nurse a baby and drink one drink! As a matter of fact, my lactation consultant says it safe to have TWO drinks and nurse a baby!" Maybe I was just being paranoid. Finally, one of the ladies came over to the table and commented on how adorable Sam is and then makes a joke about how well he must sleep since he loves beer.

John is quite excited today. Craig's company scored box seats on the 50 yd line to the Redskins game. When Craig told him that the only caveat was that they had to listen to a proposal from another company. The other company is Lear, as in Lear Jet. So there you have- John's two favorite things the Redskins and private jets. He's stoked. So when he goes to the game on Sunday the boys and I will go hang out with Jen and Lily and possibly make a trip to see Sam's best friend, Nadine, while we are in Richmond. Thanks Craig!!
We'll probably hit the farmer's market tomorrow in the morning and then I have a movie date with a friend. It will be the longest I have been away from Owen, hope he doesn't starve. Tomorrow night we plan to hang out with the Federico's and their two boys. Should be a great weekend!

Picture Day

As I am writing this Sam is having a major meltdown because he wanted to turn off the TV . He was given many opportunities to turn it off but chose not to until John turns it off. Funny thing is, he had the exact same meltdown this morning. Who knew turning off the TV was so great. These days Sam has to do EVERYTHING on his own. Toddlers do love their new found independence!

Today was picture day at school. Today is not his regular day to go but they told the parents we could bring our kids anyway and they could stay the rest of the day. An extra day of school for free? Yes, I will take that any day. They are so laid back at his new school. I think it's because the classes are so small that they really have a great deal of flexibility. I just love that he can stay for aftercare once his little 9-12 school session is over. They ask that you give them a days notice if you can and then they just bill us at the end of the month for any aftercare hours. Easy!! However, Mrs. Shay said Sam had to go to time out today for throwing materials and spitting on the slide. I was not surprised about the throwing but the spitting caught me off guard. When I told Sam that spitting anywhere outside of the bathroom sink is rude and that he needs to stop he replied, "No mommy, you need to stop spitting!" Of course he also attempted to put me in time out today too.

Owen and I went for a walk with a friend. Owen already loves being outside. He is such a sweet baby. John and Sam went to the park today, it was a beautiful day here in Virginia! We are looking forward to a nice weekend.

Speaking of sleep...

Haven't had much of that lately. Owen is back to waking every two hours at night. Let me just give a disclaimer while I am thinking of it. Since I am a bit sleep deprived be prepared to forgive any misspellings, grammatical, or punctuation mistakes. Sometimes I may even be typing with one hand while nursing.

Tuesday is usually the long day b/c John is in class until 8ish. After a couple of really long Tuesdays I decided it was in everyone's best interest, especially Sam's, if Sam went to school on Tuesdays for a couple of hours. He now goes t-w-f instead of m-w-f. Tomorrow is picture day so he will be going for that as well. I have really enjoyed having that time with Owen. When I have them both it is very hard to give them both quality attention. Sam is so active and playful that sometimes I feel as though I am merely meeting Owen's basic needs while giving most of my attention to Sam. Now, I have time to really spend some time with Owen. He is so cute, very happy baby. He smiles and coos so much right now.

The big highlights:
Mommy got Sam got a new helicopter
Daddy got Sam got a new kitchen set (stove, fridge, fake food, etc)
Sam can pretty much dress himself now
I started my Yoga class
Owen FINALLY likes to sit in his swing
oh, yes and we are potty training!

Sleep begets sleep

For some reason Owen could not sleep today. It instantly brought back memories of Sam going hours without a nap during the day. I ended up driving Owen around for an hour and when that didn't do the trick I knew we were in trouble. Maybe this means he will sleep for a long stretch tonight, but probably not.

We still had a fairly productive day. Sam and John went canoeing and I made my first loaf of homemade bread. I rarely make anything from scratch but it turned out pretty good. I plan to expand my repertoire as I become more comfortable. I never realized it took 3 hours to make a loaf of bread. Thank God for the baby carrier! Sam is getting into nursery rhymes so I pulled out my Mother Goose Book of Nursery Rhymes and Sam loved seeing some of the pictures that accompanied the rhymes. It was nice for him to enjoy a book that I had as a child. The inscription reads "Merry Christmas Amy, love Mom, 1982"

When we put Sam to bed tonight we each said "I love you Sam" and he replied with "I love you guys" which I thought was pretty funny for some reason. "You guys" seems like a funny thing for a 2 year old to say.

This might just work

Now that I see how to navigate myself a little more around the world of blogging I will add a bit more about our day. Today we went to Lily's birthday party- hard to believe she is 1. It was a great place to have a party! Unfortunately, John was not feeling well so we had to leave early. Since Sam was upset about not getting to stay at the party and play on all the great toys, I took him to Jumping Joey's, which is basically this huge place with all of those inflatable things they can run, slide, and bounce in. He was content after that. I am however bummed we had to miss the rest of the party. Well, Owen is down for at least a couple of hours and John is reading stories to Sam so our night is winding down with very few complications. I like this time of day but lately mornings are my favorite. Owen ends up in our bed around 5ish, Sam usually makes his way in there around 6ish and we all have a good snuggle before the day begins

We have to start somewhere

I have decided to have a blog for Sam and Owen. This will not only give me something to do as a stay at home mom, but also be a great way for the grandparents and other relatives to keep tabs on the boys. This is my first post so this is just a test. I hope to be able to keep this up. It will be a great way to share photos and pictures without emailing them.
